X Revokes Verification for Iranian Officials After Sanctions Report
The action followed findings from the Tech Transparency Project, which alleged that X had offered its paid X Premium service to Iranian figures restricted under American regulations.
Among the accounts affected were those of Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and Ali Larijani, Secretary of the country’s Supreme National Security Council.
U.S. sanctions prohibit American companies from engaging in business with certain Iranian individuals and entities. X has not issued a public comment regarding the badge removals.
The platform, owned by Elon Musk, has previously modified its treatment of Iranian symbols, including replacing the Iranian flag emoji on its web platform with an older version associated with pro-monarchy groups opposing the current government. Last month, amid widespread protests in Iran, X updated the Iran flag emoji to the Lion and Sun emblem, replacing the Islamic Republic symbol.
